I’ve just seen another post related to how ‘Expensive’ professional photographers are. I see this all of the time. The client is usually shocked at how much they charge for just ’Taking Pictures’. Usually accompanied by ‘My Uncle/ Friend/ Sister' takes great photos, it’s only a few hours work’ etc. Since i've been marketing myself more as a Wedding Photographer in Pembrokeshire i've seen this question asked a lot more often. I see people charging £200 for wedding photography as it's their hobby or second job and for some reason clients expect them to be on the same level as someone who is a professional, working in this industry every day of the year.
Let me start by stating incredibly clearly that this isn’t me ranting in an angry manner at all as I completely understand why this opinion comes through, especially with every phone having a half decent camera on and the price of prosumer camera's being more affordable than ever. You can't expect someone to understand something like this without knowing all the details about what goes into a professional job.
I’ve had many blunt replies in shock at how much I charge (I really don’t charge anywhere near as much as the national average by the way…) so I'm going to break down what’s involved with my shoots and why I charge what I charge. I should also add the prices/ time below are a lot less than that for my cinematography work...
For the sake of this example, let's say it’s a full day wedding shoot:
This generally starts with me doing the final equipment check and leaving at 6/7am and shooting throughout the whole day until 10pm-12am.
Rough total cost of equipment I use for a shoot: £14,550.
Average time spent on each shoot in total (Including equipment checks days before, traveling, time spent shooting (Usually with barely any breaks), time spent backing up secure copies of all shots in the early hours of the morning, processing all of your shots, producing your deliverables etc: 37-45 Hours
Cost of learning my craft, licensing, investing in resources and gaining experience: £32,000+
The reason I charge what I charge is for the peace of mind that you have someone who is competent. Someone who has encountered every potential problem or issue that could arise on your day, whether it be the weather, awful lighting conditions, a registrar refusing to allow flash or limiting the photos in the ceremony, guests blocking the aisle with their iPads, equipment failures, tricking that one uncle with the crazy expressions into smiling, predicting each beautiful moment before it even happens and making sure to capture it perfectly and anything else that gets thrown my way.
You may well have had a quote elsewhere at a fraction of the price, but I’m a professional with the experience, credentials, knowledge and endorsed by some of the largest camera gear companies in the world.
The choice is always yours and I'm never offended by someone turning my work down because of my price!
Just thought I'd put this out there!
