This is a bit different from my usual review as it doesn’t relate directly to photography/ cinematography, however it’s in constant use in my studio as well as on location so I thought i’d share my thoughts!
This is the Vava Voom. It’s a portable speaker with a built in battery that packs a punch for volume and overall quality of sound. Why is this relevant to my work? Well i’m constantly shooting in the studio where I want to control the music from my phone rather than running back to my desk. There’s also plenty of times where i’m shooting on location and want some background music to work to or something loud enough to be a reference for a band if they’re playing to a studio track they’ve previously recorded.
So when I was being sent that those were the scenarios where I thought it would be of the most use but I must admit I was somewhat hesitant about the quality of the audio as well as the potentially volume. I’ve seen similar units in the past where they look great but they let you down with sound quality or battery life.
Well first things first, when the parcel arrived I was surprised by the weight. Upon opening it I couldn’t believe the quality of the packaging and design of the product itself. This is a beautiful unboxing experience and the weight and build quality of the speaker unit itself is fantastic.
This left me with one more thing to try, which was to sync it with my phone over bluetooth and test the quality. Setup took no longer than 30 seconds from pressing the on button to connecting my phone and the first track I played through it blew me away. Not only is the depth of bass there backed by different EQ setups for you to play with depending on your preference but the overall quality and potential volume this unit has is incredible.
Since then i’ve had it in the studio and at home playing the soundtrack to my day. Battery life is impressive boasting up to 10 hours and although I haven’t timed my uses of it I can confirm that the battery life is great. Furthermore I was caught short with the battery on my phone the other day so I thought i’d try plugging my phone into the unit via USB and I was pleasantly surprised to see it was then charging my phone as well as playing the audio!
So all in all i’m incredibly impressed by the unit and it will be in the studio and my gear bag for the foreseeable future.
