It's hard to be online these days without coming across Snapchat or more specifically their 'Specs' with a built in camera. Well they are now available to buy online via Amazon HERE.
These were originally only available via their custom made vending machines that they would transport to various places, primarily in the US. The hype around these despite retailing for over £130 was incredible with endless queues forming almost immediately. So what's all the fuss about?
Well the old saying that the best camera you have is the one you have with you goes hand in hand with these specs. Granted, the chances are that if you own a pair of these you also have your phone in your pocket, however to be able to touch the side of your glasses to capture a video/ photo with it's unique field a view certainly means you can capture things more immediately and in a style that no other camera offers.
So are they worth it? Well thats entirely up to you, my personal opinion is that I'd love a pair, if they were considerably cheaper or if I was offered a pair to test out (Hint hint... :P ). The reality of it is that like many other gimmicks they will likely end up on my shelf after a few weeks. I'm sure i'd have some fun with them but the style itself isn't something I would usually wear and I can barely remember to keep on top of charging my phone let alone a pair of sunglasses. This is of course my own opinion and expectation of my experience with them. It's not to fault the product but simply what I'd expect to happen.
The idea of having a camera that's always on me that isn't my phone is very appealing to me. In fact i've been trying to be more pro active in carrying my A7SII with me as often as I can but I must admit I struggle with it. The problem with the Snapchat Spectacles is that the style/ look of the shot is very distinct. Not something that I would shoot usually. I know i'd be able to get some great shots with them but much like using a 'prism' or other photography gimmick it becomes repetitive within a very short period of time. If you could shoot different focal lengths etc then it may have more use for me. I know this isn't the purpose of these glasses so i'm missing the point here but in general this is where these fall short for me.
